May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month.  It’s spring, so riders are hitting the road.  There are things we can all do – drivers and riders, to improve safety for everyone.

For drivers, one of the biggest causes of accidents with motorcycles is distracted driving – texting, talking on the phone, checking messages.  This is always a risky thing to do, but where motorcycles are concerned, it’s even more risky because motorcycles can be hard to spot even with your complete attention. Drivers can also be extra careful with blind spots – it can be very easy for a motorcycle to be unseen in a blind spot.  Check your mirrors, check your blind spots.

For riders, a basic rule of thumb is to pretend that drivers don’t see you, because there’s a pretty good chance they don’t.  To improve the chances of being seen, always ride with your lights on and wear brightly colored clothing.
